The Fortunous Dynasty's Exploits
For a forge world, Smokestack is surprisingly resource poor. Although there are great deserts that provide megatonnes of silica and mountains riddled with iron veins, it lacks much else.
The Magos expect that the comparative mineral poverty is a result of the systems formation. Smokestack is the only proper planet in the system. The rest is a network of asteroids, dwarf planets and comets. It is here that the rich minerals are found and delivered.
The system to bring in the materials from the asteroids is shockingly simple to those from outside Smokestack. There are no bulk landers or orbital forges. Instead the asteroids are aimed at the great Delivery Fields and crashed into the surface. Then the asteroids are covered in miners, tech-priests and servitors. Each is stripped of its valuable materials and the rest left as rubble.
The constant need of the forges does not allow an overly orderly landing. Asteroids are constantly falling to the planet. The areas are large enough that it is rare for an asteroid to strike a mining crew, but it happens.
The Leman Russ Mines
Visitors to Smokestack can expect to see fresh Leman Russes driving out of mine heads in a constant stream. They can watch the tank drive off into the nearest Delivery Field and begin to fire at newly crashed asteroids.
For the Archmagos of Smokestack have long maintained that the forges should be as close to their materials as possible. So the smelters, manufactora and assembly lines go down deep into the earth. They follow the old mining tunnels. Arches are formed to support the ceiling and the symbol of the Adeptus Mechanicus is carved from the living rock.
The heart is the 50 kilometer-long tank assembly lines. Here the bare hull of a Russ is laid upon the endlessly moving track and has her equipment slowly added. She is named, blessed and assembled as the pounding of hammers, hiss of torches and chants of priests surround her. When the tank reaches the end her new machine spirit is ritually invoked.
Then a crew of three- two lay people and a tech priest- take the tank out to the Delivery Field. There they test the tank out, finding out if she is truly up to the task. The weapon training is taken out on various asteroids, cracking them for the mining crews. Driving is done through impact craters and over rubble. Vis-plates are tested through the bleak nights and sudden burns and flares of the asteroids.
Then the tank is sent off-world, almost always to Dolat.
